Introduction
Homework is a way for students to understand what they learned in school. It’s a great way to sharpen up on skills and ensure discipline of working hard as well as meeting deadlines. However, having too much homework is detrimental to mental health and often one of the biggest factors of stress. In the field of STEM, homework is not easy, and having too much of it, will affect others mentally.
Homework
Homework is beneficial as students progress from elementary school to middle and high school. It allows parents to get a grasp on how their kids are doing and what their strengths and weaknesses are (Terada, 2018). The existence of homework isn’t the problem, the problem is the amount of homework given. Students don’t need a lot of homework, if they are given problems that focus on quality rather than quantity. The optimal amount of homework is 1 to 2 hours in high school and less than an hour in middle school. (Cooper, Robinson, 2003) This amount of homework is good enough for students to comprehend and review what they learned in class. However, when students exceed this amount, it becomes too stressful and counterproductive. Students often become sleep deprived or miss meals due to homework. They also tend to drop relationships and extracurriculars due to homework load and lacking time. Most work given to students is busy work that doesn’t enhance education is what studies show. Additionally, higher performing students had the worst involvement with family and community. In a survey, it stated 53% of students said that homework was the biggest stressor while another 33% said getting good grades was (Parker, 2014). Thus, due to how stressful large amounts of homework are, schools should offer the optimal amount of homework which should be less than 2 hours.
Conclusion
Homework is important for students to complete and it should not be removed because of the effects it causes. Instead, it should be limited and should focus on quality rather than quantity. All students should get less than 2 hours of homework, so they can focus on extracurriculars, maintain relationships, and be fine mentally.
